DARUMA DOLL

Miniature brochures for Renée Voltaire, a brand selling eco friendly, healthy foods and goods mainly inspired by Japan.

This project involved lots of research of the history behind the popular Daruma Doll – a Japanese talisman meant to bring good fortune and discipline to its owner.

The folders open from the top down – a nod to tategaki (縦書き), the traditional method of writing from top to bottom. They feature a guide of use as well as telling the story of Bodhidharma; the founder of taoism whose mystical life story gave the Daruma its purpose and characteristic look.

Renée Voltaire products all come packaged with a custom pattern and logo, that symbolize the main ingredients or uses of the product itself. Borrowing shapes from the Daruma’s facial hair and markings, I created a flower with a slightly psychedelic vibe to represent repetition in meditation and focus, with the eye at its center in the logo.

The Daruma comes in many colors which represent success in different areas of life, and so I tailored the look of the brochures to the dolls’ respective colors.
